STEVE
MARSHALL - BIOGRAPHY
I was born in
1956 in Hull,
a Yorkshire fishing village noted for its peculiar accent.
From an early age I had piano and cello lessons and taught myself
to play the guitar. When I was almost 18, I joined the Hull
Truck Theatre Company. I toured for a few years as an actor
and musician. I was also in several local bands. On moving to London
in the early 80's, I began to get work as a composer in the booming
and dreadful advertising
industry. The money was welcome though, and I began to build
up my own studio.
After a few years of producing music for godawful commercials I'd
had enough. When the advertising world went into a well-deserved
decline, I managed to move into producing music and sound FX for
animated films. In 1988 I was invited to work for a few months as
a guest composer in the BBC
Radiophonic Workshop.
Then I moved into TV documentary, and for ten years I composed and
produced music for wildlife and travel films. Some of the music
from this period is featured on my two library albums for Carlin.
On moving to the Avebury
area of Wiltshire
in 1993 I continued to work in TV, producing music for documentaries,
kids TV and animation. I still live and work there, and now have
several hundred film credits.
A trip to Africa in 2003 led to my producing two albums with Laye
Sow and Jelitara Futa from Senegal.
Laye Sow's album has just been released by Orange
World Records.
One of my passions is surround sound, and I have released Bilocation,
an album in DTS 5.1 surround, which combines recordings made in
India and the UK.
Another volume is slowly taking shape, based on a whole new set
of recordings - many of them made in Africa.
For the last
couple of years I have been kept busy restoring the lost recordings
of legendary 60's psychedelic band Raspberry
Parade. I'm currently very busy writing, but look forward to
playing music whenever I can.
